Eating Disorders

Food is like a language. Our behaviour around it can sometimes express important needs that through therapy we can translate, understand and meet differently. I have a specialism in the field of disordered eating, having practiced for the past six years as part of a multidisciplinary team at a private eating disorder clinic in Central London.

Here are some of the specific issues I can support you with in my private practice.

Bulimia Nervosa
Bing-Eating Disorder
Body image issues
Emotional overeating
Obesity
Weight management

Food addiction
Self-sabotage
Food restriction
Obsessive thoughts about food
Compulsive exercise
Fear of weight gain

Please note: While I work with clients who present with the symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa, I am aware of the limits of psychotherapy alone to provide appropriate clinical support to those who present at a very low weight. I therefore do not offer therapy to this client group in my private practice, but am always happy to refer on to specialist organisations that can offer a structured and dedicated team approach to this condition.

Working with food & eating

My way of working keeps your relationship with food as its focus. It does not dismiss your eating behaviours as side-effects of unconscious conflict or emotional pain. Instead, I really want to tune in to what the food says to you, what thoughts and feelings it evokes, and how you respond to its messages.

In this way, we can tailor practical and nutritionally-guided interventions to relieve your symptoms and help you to find new, more nourishing ways of expressing and meeting your innermost emotional needs.

Developing authentic self-esteem

In my work with eating issues, I am sensitive to the deeper and sometimes hidden influences that impact every person’s relationship with food, weight and body image.

The conflicting and confusing messages of the media, corporations and popular opinion about what bodies should look like, what is healthy, attractive, and what is acceptable or desirable to eat can trap you in a vicious cycle of desperately wanting change, but lacking the bedrock of acceptance and affirmation on which to base it.

Building self-worth on a foundation of your core values, while identifying and learning to filter out the messages that attack and undermine them, will be an integral part of our therapeutic work together.
